METAIRIE CEMETERY

Beautiful Metairie Cemetery was entered in the National Register of Historic Places on December 6, 1991. It was given this honor in recognition of its stature as the burial place of many famous people and the home to breathtaking aboveground family mausoleums, tombs and monuments. These magnificent memorials, made of marble, granite and brick, testify to the dignity and significance of all those who are buried there.

The grounds of Metairie Cemetery originally held a race track that was quite popular in its heyday. The oval outline of the Metairie Race Course, built in 1838, can still be seen in the cemetery today. But the ravages of the Civil War and Reconstruction caused the race track to falter and on May 25, 1872, the land was converted into a cemetery, owned by the Metairie Cemetery Association.

In 2003, Metairie Cemetery was named by Forbes.com as one of the ten best cemeteries due to its unique historical significance and beauty. At Lake Lawn Metairie, we have always taken great pride in the serenity and distinctive elegance of this very special place. This honor is a reflection of our deep commitment to preserve the memories of those entrusted to our care.

Metairie Cemetery is the final resting place of numerous famous and revered people, including nine governors of the state of Louisiana; seven mayors of New Orleans; and three Confederate generals—including P.G.T. Beauregard and Richard "Dick" Taylor, son of U.S. President Zachary Taylor. Jefferson Davis, the only president of the Confederate States of America, was entombed here temporarily after his death in New Orleans in 1889. Louis Prima, the world-famous singer and entertainer, is also buried here.

LAKE LAWN PARK CEMETERY AND MAUSOLEUM

The beautifully landscaped grounds of Lake Lawn Park Cemetery are located adjacent to Metairie Cemetery. Lake Lawn was established in 1949 and offers a variety of options for families, including ground burial spaces, family tombs and outdoor terrace mausoleums, and columbarium niches for cremated remains.

A main feature of this serene space is the stately Lake Lawn Park community mausoleum. One of the first major community mausoleums to be built in New Orleans, Lake Lawn Park reflects the beauty and splendor of man’s desire to memorialize those who have gone before him. It contains more than 31,000 crypts in a majestic building with fully carpeted corridors, mahogany paneling and peaceful lounge areas. Private and semiprivate rooms are finished in rich imported marbles and enhanced by detailed and colorful mosaic murals. Family spaces and columbarium niches range from elaborate to simple.

ALL SAINTS MAUSOLEUM

All Saints Mausoleum is located next to Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, on the lovely grounds of Metairie Cemetery. It was dedicated on November 1, 1986—All Saints Day—as a joint venture with the Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans.

Inside the magnificent, climate-controlled edifice, visitors will find numerous individually handcrafted stained-glass windows. The building also includes the stunning Queen of All Saints Court, a two-story atrium that blends lush greenery with the elegance of hardwood and marble, and the Court of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, another two-story atrium adorned with polished Italian marble, stained-glass, mosaics and an exclusively commissioned statue of Jesus. These areas are perfectly suited for peaceful reflection.

We are additionally proud to announce construction plans for the beautiful Phase IV Development, for which preconstruction preneed discounts are now available.
