Former N.O. Archbishop Philip M. Hannan dies at 98

Retired New Orleans Archbishop Philip M. Hannan passed away Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011. He was 98 years old. In 1965, Hannan began his service as Archbishop of New Orleans, a position he would proudly hold for almost a quarter century.
Highlights throughout Hannan’s more than 70 years as an active and remarkable Catholic priest, bishop or archbishop include serving as a paratroop chaplain in WWII; presiding over the funeral of or delivering eulogies for U.S. President John F. Kennedy, U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis; serving as host when Pope John Paul II visited New Orleans in 1987.
Funeral services for Hannan include:
- Public visitation at Notre Dame Seminary, 2901 S. Carrollton Ave., New Orleans on Monday, Oct. 3 from 6:30-9 p.m.; Tuesday, Oct. 4 from 9 a.m.-9p.m.; Wednesday, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
- A New Orleans Jazz-Style procession and a public motorcade will transport Hannan from the Seminary to the St. Louis Cathedral, 615 Pere Antoine Alley, New Orleans French Quarter, on Wednesday., Oct. 5 at approximately 2 p.m.
- Public visitation at the St. Louis Cathedral from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, followed by the Funeral Mass starting at 2 p.m.
